Like all good things, Melbourne’s little gems are hidden in its lively laneways. We stumbled upon Little Cupcakes by chance while trying to find some shelter from the wind during a breezy afternoon in the city.
This cute cupcake boutique is no bigger than 10 square metres and yet it bakes an impressive daily selection of cupcakes – including my personal favourite, Red Velvet.
Cupcakes here come in two sizes – mini ($2) and regular ($4). Though the small size is a mere mouthful, it’s a great way for first-timers to sample the flavours without the burden of eating too much. Although, the cupcakes are so light and airy that you wouldn’t realise if you did!
There are just enough chairs and tables for those who wish to dine in, but most stroll in for a quick takeaway treat. Sitting inside this cafe is a delight in itself, the decor is adorable and there are interesting details everywehre you look.
During our particular visit, Mr. Taste and I try the Red Velvet, Orange Jaffa and Chocolate Mint flavours. Each is wonderfully made, both soft and airy, without the dryness and density that often brings down other cupcakes. The icing on the cupcakes is even fluffier, plopped on like a cloud of sugary goodness.
In all honesty, I don’t think any of the cupcakes I’ve had in Sydney live up to the ones at Little Cupcakes! Needless to say, we will be back for a second fix…

cupcakes seems to be all the rage these days. i’ve never seen see much competition for cupcakes. it’s like the new tapas for the sweet tooth
I live in Melbourne and I haven’t even been here yet! Lovely photos – I will have to check it out one of these days!
oh! definitely a place i’d love to hit up when i go back to melbourne =D
I find that a lot of the cupcakes here in Sydney are quite dry, but these ones sound great! Must try them out next time I go to Melbourne
How cuuttee hee hee and yeah agree with Jacq about the cupcakes in Syd tending to be dry
I agree as well, the cupcakes in Sydney I’ve tried have been really dry too. Maybe it’s because they’re not baked fresh? The ones at My Little Cupcake in Neutral Bay are also soft and fluffy – it’s the only place I’ll recommend for a good cupcake in Sydney!
I adore this lil shop. i stalked it down on my last visit to Melbourne i also had the red velvet but was really disapointed. When i had it i felt it just tasted like a red vanilla cake. was however compairing it to my red velvet cake. I also found the frosting to buttery. I am glad you had a good experience though and will have to have a second sample on my next visit.
You should keep your eye out for Sparkle cupcakery when they do there raspberry red velvet YUM
P.s Great site keep up the great work.
I received a box of these little cupcakes as a present. Oh La La – delicious and moist and fluffy! I’ll be using these guys next time I need to send a present to someone in Melbourne – better than flowers.
The company logo looks exactly the same as Cupcakes on Pitt in Sydney…same people???
The cupcake crazy started with sex in the city, hate to say it!
Little Cupcakes has a great, relaxed atmosphere and the cafe/shop itself is too cool. People of all demographics hop in and out for a little box of the goodies. I enjoy sitting at the window or at the big bench for a nice drink and chat with friends. Lovely place!
