By Ms. Taste
I have a love/hate relationship with the Sydney Fish Markets. What I loathe (the crowds, the awful parking, the tourists) is enough to drive me away and never return, and yet, what I love about it (the oysters, fresh sashimi, lobsters) makes me fall in love all over again.

Fresh Rock Oysters - $14 per dozen
On a certain Monday, Mr. Taste and I are both lucky enough to have days off. We’re craving sunshine and oysters and decide to brave a trip to the Fish Markets. Even on a lonely old Monday, the Fish Markets are incredibly busy – tourists by the bus load stream in and out, while school kids flock around tables outside, fighting off families holidaying from interstate.

Mr. Taste and I know exactly what we’ve come for, so we dart in separate directions to collect our respective lunches. While I make way for the oysters and salmon sashimi, Mr. Taste lines up for lobster at Peters Fish Market.

Grilled half lobster with chips - $21
Mr. Taste’s serving of grilled lobster is quite modest but is well seasoned and satisfies his aching stomach. The chips are nice addition to the meal, fresh and hot from the fryer.

Salmon sashimi - $11 for 200g
My sashimi from Christie’s Seafood comes neatly sliced and packaged. Christie’s is particularly popular with the Cantonese tourists, who huddle in groups around the stall, making it hard for me to order. The fight is worthwhile, as the sashimi is wonderfully fresh and slightly fatty. The price is very reasonable too at $11 for 20-odd pieces.
When it comes to the Fish Markets, Sydneysiders know to tread with caution, but those who brave the journey are rewarded handsomely for it.
