On a lazy Saturday, after a late 4pm lunch (if you can still call that lunch), we reschedule and postpone our dinner to…. midnight. Being the responsible people that we are, we always make sure we fulfill our allotment of daily meals so we head into the city for some late night Malaysian at Mamak.

At 1am, this restaurant is still rocking, with inappropriately dressed girls braving the winter wind, queuing along the footpath for sweet roti and oldies kicking back inside, hogging the tables and drinking tea all night.

Roti Tisu $9

Mamak

Nasi Lemak $7.50

Our first order is Malaysia’s national dish, Nasi Lemak, which comes with coconut rice, dried anchovies, peanuts, boiled egg, cucumbers and sambal chilli.

Mamak

Ayam Goreng $12

Late night eating isn’t the same without super greasy heart attack and the fried chicken certainly hits the spot. Ms. Taste eats only one and leaves me to struggle to finish the other three enormous pieces.

Mamak

Teh Tarik $3.50

I sneak in a sip of Ms. Taste’s Teh Tarik, the famous Malaysian tea, sweetened with condensed milk and poured from a height into the glass to create a frothy topping. It’s not too hot so it isn’t long before it’s quickly finished off by Ms. Taste.

Mamak

Roti Tisu $9

The stand-out dish of the night is the crispy yet chewy, sugar crystal lined cone that is the Roti Tisu. We eagerly rip into it in addictive mouthfuls of sweet thin tissuey goodness.

Mamak

In the wee hours of the morning, Mamak certainly hasn’t lost its touch. It’s still buzzing with customers and the food orders stream out as quickly as they are placed. Our only gripe is with the waiter who lost our original roti order and left it 45 minutes before telling us. Not that he really cares, his shift ended at 12:30pm.
