Mr. Taste and I visit Bankstown for two things:
1. A hot bowl of overpriced pho at Pho An
2. The incredibly satisfying tamarind prawns at My Canh

Taramind Prawns at My Canh
My Canh was probably my first real foray into Vietnamese food. My knowledge of Vietnamese cuisine used to only consist of pho tai and pork rolls (I grew up on the North Shore, can you blame me?). But when Mr. Taste and I started dating, My Canh was one of the very first places he brought me to. I’ve been hooked ever since.

Tamarind Prawns w/out Shell - $16
The tamarind prawns here are absolutely amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else. I’ve often wondered about the recipe and how it’s made. I even tried replicating it at home to no avail. If I were to guess, I would say the prawns are lightly battered and deep fried to a crisp golden before being quickly tossed in a onion tamarind relish. The result is a hot mouthful of juicy prawns that’s the perfect balance of sweet and sour. The only downside is the shocking onion breath that lingers in your system for several hours afterwards.

Paw Paw Salad with Pork, Prawn and Jellyfish - $16

Prawn Crackers
Another favourite here is the paw paw salad with pork, prawn and jellyfish. Served with a plate of prawn crackers, it makes the perfect entree for any meal. The flavours are vibrant and light on the palate with the right mix of textures. It isn’t very spicy though, so feel free to ask for more chilli when ordering.
Other standout favourites at My Canh include the Combination Fish (served two ways: in soup and caramelised clay pot), Salt and Pepper Pork and the Avocado Fruit Shake.

Mm – tamarind prawns sound yummy! And that pork paw paw salad looks pretty good too – although, I don’t see enough fiery chillis mashed into it. The hotter the better!
We had a great late night meal here. Didn’t try the tamarind prawns though-maybe next time!
Hi Forager – I totally agree. Mr Taste’s aunts have me hooked on the super chilli variety!
Hi Lorraine – You have to try the prawns, they’re amazing. What did you end up ordering?
