• Recipe: Fried Rice – Battle for Kitchen Supremacy
  • By Mr. Taste

Being the forward thinkers we are, we always cook four times the suggested amount of rice for two people. Enough for tonight’s dinner, tomorrow’s lunch, tomorrow’s fried rice dinner and tomorrow tomorrow’s fried rice lunch. And so, tonight is now tomorrow, and yesterday’s leftover rice is about to be transformed into a deliciously simple fried rice.

The problem is, Ms. Taste likes her fried rice in that boring, flavourless, ‘end of the wedding banquet when no-one cares about food anymore’ style; where I like my fried rice in flavourful, totally not boring, amazing and super tasty tomato sauce style. We discussed at length the pros and cons of each of our proposed fried rices through the ever-reliable medium of loud shouting. But still, there was no sign of a pending resolution.

So we set about finding the answer through the ancientest of ancient traditions which has made and destroyed civilisations: the little understood ritual performed by Amazonian witch doctors, reportedly said to bring eternal youth and a cookbook deal to all that endure it’s unrepenting cruelty – the battle for kitchen supremacy.

    Ingredients:

    • Leftover Rice
    • Eggs
    • Canola Oil
    • Light Soy Sauce
    • Fish Sauce
    • Chinese Rice Wine
    • Chicken Slices
    • 2 Eggs, Scrambled
    • Bowl of Shredded Lettuce

    Method:

Heat pan until hot, drizzle oil in centre and swish around. Fry chicken slices until just cooked. Transfer to a bowl and let it rest.

Clean pan and reheat on high heat, drizzle a generous amount of oil and fry up the eggs. When they are almost done, pour in rice and stir quickly.

Stir the rice into the scrambled eggs

When the rice and eggs are evenly mixed, combine the chicken and lettuce.

    Fried Rice

Stir quickly to prevent rice from sticking to the pan

Stirring quickly, pour in the soy, fish sauce and rice wine.

    Fried Rice

    Drizzle on that rice wine

Turn off the heat and serve!

    Ingredients:

    • Leftover Rice
    • Canola Oil
    • Sweet Soy Sauce
    • Chinese Rice Wine
    • Sriracha
    • Tomato Sauce
    • Chinese Sausage
    • Chicken Bits
    • 2 Eggs, Scrambed
    • Assorted Frozen Vegetables

    Method:

With a bit of oil, fry up your eggs like an omelette but rip the egg bits into shreds. Set it aside, and then fry up the chinese sausage and then also the chicken seperately.

Tossing the rice with the soy sauce

Heat up your wok nice and hot and get the oil to be also nice and hot. Throw in your rice and toss it around a bit so it all gets some of that oil. Then you can throw in some soy sauce and toss it around.

    Fried Rice

    Throw in the meat

Then throw in your eggs and toss it around. Throw in the sausage and toss it around.

    Fried Rice

    Throw in the vegies

Then you can do the same for the rest of it. In fact, the order of it all doesn’t really matter, the important thing is to toss everything around so there aren’t ethnic gangs of rice clumps, ready to cause uneven mouthfuls of trouble.

    Fried Rice

Make sure its all evenly tossed

So, the question remains, who’s cuisine reigns supreme?

If it weren’t for the sausage, Ms. Taste’s one would have won hands down. The “throw in the meat” shot won me over in the end.

Sorry Ms Taste, Mr Taste had me at his “amazing and super tasty tomato sauce style”! Hehe… though I’m sure the article is somewhat biased considering Mr Taste wrote it!

What a massive tomato sauce bottle!

Sorry, Ms. Taste, but the chinese sausages make Mr. Taste’s fried rice a sure win for me!

It’s a close call (the Chinese sausage swayed me too). But I’m a traditionalist, so Ms Taste’s version is the winner!

Oh I think I would like both depending on my mood…Ms. Taste’s reminds me of what my Mum would make for me when I was younger with the more subtle flavour, and Mr. Taste’s appeals to my tastebuds now with the kecap manis, chilli and chinese sausage!

both looks homely fried rice but I have to go for Mr. taste cuz the “a bit burnt” chinese sausage is my fav !

I like your meat, but fried rice is ALL about the soy sauce for me (and sweet soy sauce is a disgusting abomination) so Ms. Taste wins, no question about it!

Hi Simon! It’s all about having the optimal meat/carb ratio ;)

Hi Simon! We’ll make some spring rolls when we can afford to buy oil to deep fry in. Those damn oil companies and their greed grrr.

Hi Rilsta! I can only report the truth :P That bottle is going to keep us going until Costco opens. Then we will buy a bottle that will last us a lifetime.

Hi Ally! Another win for the chinese sausage ticket!

Hi Belle! Fried rice also needs change. Chinese sausage is the change we can believe in. Yes we can!

Hi Steph! I think the Chinese vs SE Asia comes to play here too. I grew up with my fried rice and she grew up with hers.

Hi Ja! It got burnt because I was too busy playing the internet haha. Cooking and internetting – a delicously deadly game

Hi Elodie! About sweet soy sauce, the funniest thing happened once at the chinese grocery. While shopping, Ms Taste has a change of heart and decides to return a bottle of sweet soy sauce to where it belongs. She leans down and places it safely on the bottom shelf. However the tiny purse/bag/thing she’s got over her shoulder swings slowly around, taps one of the giant bottles on the bottom shelf which wobbles for an eternity, before gently falling on the floor 10cm below. The bottle cracks like an egg and the goo within oozes out ever so slowly. We go find someone to help and by the time we return, there is a giant pool of goo, still slowly expanding. Oh to see that look on her face again as she watched that bottle wobble, unforgettable.

Hi Nooschi! Fried rice without flavour is booooring, might as well just go eat steamed rice :P

Hi Suz! Exactly, what sort of weirdo would add lettuce to their fried rice. C’mon!

Hi Sof! Never tried fried rice with tomato sauce! It is amazing! Didn’t you come with us that time where we ate fried rice at that holiday place?

Hi Clekitty! Another vote for chinese sausages! A resounding landslide victory on the back of a strong showing from the chinese sausage.

Great job to Mr and Ms Taste.
Ms Taste I like your style Chinese fried rice with Fish Sauce.
Mr Taste just one suggestion instead of Sriracha and Tomato sauce you can use pik pow sauce. It will give the redish color and a punch to fried lice. I would be gladly to eat both fried rice. Both are a winner..
