Let’s admit it, sushi train is not cheap.
You don’t get the chance to truly go nuts without having to sign for a three figure bill at the end of the night. So when we heard about Sushi Choo‘s recession busting $20 all you can eat dinner, we just had to book ourselves in.

Red cage lanterns are a highlight
I am a big fan of the interior design at the Ivy complex. I love all the whimsical details the clever guys over at Hecker Phelan & Guthrie have put into each space. And at Sushi Choo, it is the low hanging lanterns and Astro Boy figurines. The quirkiness takes me be back to the excitement and fanfare of Harajuku.

Sushi Choo's adorable fit-out

All you can eat sushi for $20 - who wouldn't say yes!
Mr. Taste and I are pleased with the selection we are presented on the sushi train – salmon, prawn, kingfish and tuna nigiri; prawn tempura; chicken katsu; salmon avocado, tuna avocado, chicken avocado and california rolls; edamame and seaweed salad.

Prawn Nigiri
The sushi is surprisingly fresh. And we can see why – there are three chefs on deck, skillfully serving up as many new plates as there are ones being depleted.

Tuna Nigiri
While the more exotic scallop, eel or crab varieties are nowhere to be found, we didn’t really expect them to be there. I was disappointed with the absence of sashimi plates though. I guess a few of the other diners felt the same as I spotted the waitstaff clearing several plates of uneaten rice balls.

Chicken Katsu and Avocado Roll
If you love sushi and want a big fix without worrying about the bill, then Sushi Choo comes highly recommended. However, be warned that the selection is not as wide and varying as most other sushi trains. It is fantastic value considering Mr. Taste and I paid $40 for 35 plates!
Note: Sushi Choo’s all-you-can-eat special is available between 6-8pm from Tuesdays through to Fridays.

I’ve always wondered about how good this place was (especially since we’re always at the ivy for drinkies :p)!
Thanks for the review!
Seems quite pedestrian but I guess what can you expect from all you can eat sushi for $20.
I imagine that with the quality and sheer quantity, it’s worth the dollars.
Hi Sam – This place is perfect for a quick bite to eat before drinks upstairs at the Ivy!
Hi Simon – Totally agree with you. There’s not much in terms of variety, but the quality and freshness of the sushi is definitely hard to beat.
That is a good deal, considering 12-1 and 6-8pm is hardly ‘early’, and Sushi Choo is normally pretty pricey. Thanks for the info!
That is awesome value! I had about half that amount of sushi at makoto for about 50 bucks (but I was picking expensive plates). I love those lights, I always obsess over the lights at restaurants.
it’s great to see what they give you for $20.
Funniest thing last time at Makoto Chatswood. Everyone is shouting out “irasshaimase” as usual but then I see one of the senior sushi chefs go ballistic at one of the bigger taller younger sushi chefs – “irasshaima-SE! irasshaima-SE! irasshaima-SE!”. The big chef repeats it quietly back to him and gets back to his sushi roll hesitantly. He then looks out of the corner of his eye to the senior chef again and gets another “irasshaima-SE!”.
Totally hilarious
Lol @ Mr. Taste’s comment. I’d find it hard not to laugh out loud at that…!
35 plates – impressive!

i went recently and it was disappointing, the first all you can eat where i didnt ALL you can eat,the choices seemed limited and i was bored with it
I went there yesterday with some guys from work. What a great lunch deal. The sushi on the train is usually the stuff you find on the cheaper coloured plates at other conveyor belt sushi restaurants, but the atmosphere is much better than most, and the location is great.
TERRIBLE sushi…does NOT compare to sushi train..all you can taste is salt and the variety is seriously lacking!
