It’s been a couple of months since we last had a truly American burger – we’re talking juicy beef patties, wholesome cheddar cheese, crispy onion rings and a milkshake to wash it all down.
I knew instantly after reading about The Counter, we needed to make the trip to Crows Nest to take in this authentic American burger joint to relive the fond memories of our last trip to the US.
So on a cold, wet winter’s night, with empty stomachs and stuck all the way in the lower North Shore, Ms. Taste and I headed to check out The Counter. The restaurant is as classic an American diner can get (with a hint of Aussie locality thanks to the live rugby feed on the large flatscreen TVs). Even our waiter had an American accent!
I had the strawberry shake which, surprisingly, was made from real strawberries. Oh the joy of fishing out bits of little strawberries from the bottom. I would describe the size as ‘Aussie modest’ (as opposed to the ‘America ridiculous’ we had in Las Vegas which was twice the size). I was still able to finish it off before we left – no wastage!
I really liked these sweet potato chips. A nice alternative to regular french fries, I only wish more places would have these. The onion strings were pretty good too, but after also having them stuffed in my burger, I couldn’t finish this off.
When it came to selecting our burgers, the multitude of choices we were offered meant analysis paralysis. After much deliberation, I choose the preset Counter Burger. It has the smaller 150g size beef patty (weighed after cooking!), sauteed mushrooms, onion strings, provolone, lettuce, tomato and a sun dried tomato vinaigrette. It tasted just as good as any American burger, minus the heart aching fat factor.
Ms Taste chose the custom built option: wholemeal bun, 150g size beef patty, grilled onions, beetroot, provolone, mixed lettuce and red relish sauce. In case you haven’t already`guessed, she was trying to recreate the McOz – bring it back McDonalds!!!!

Love the side shots which show exactly how packed those burgers are!
Hiya! love the look of your blog, and thanks for the mention! Strangely I’ve never seen anyone sitting at the counter at The Counter haha. That’s awesome that there’s real strawberries in the shake, I’ve been wanting to try it!
great post! I am looking forward to going back next weekend actually

Ahh you guys shoulda mixed up the milkshake! Tis fun!
Haha been Counter so many time I think I have become ‘America ridiculous’…
Also check out Burgerfuel (another very awesome burger place) cos I think they do better kumara chips with aioli!
Hi Simon! Thanks for your kind words! The onion rings were delicious, but I couldn’t eat them alone – they need some balancing out with other foods or else you’re just eating fried batter haha (not that there’s anything wrong with that
)
Hi Lorraine! They’re so packed and they’re the smallest size! I can’t imagine what kind of a jaw you’ll need to eat the bigger sizes.
Hi Steph! Thanks! I’m thinking on our next visit, we’ll sit right up at the counter and get some awkward banter going with the waitstaff haha.
Hi Lisa! Oh lucky! I wish we didn’t live so far, otherwise we’d be there every other weekend too!
Hi Suze! I wish I had a bowl of sweet potato fries right now!
Hi FFichiban! I was having a big craving for some strawberry shake but next time I think I’ll try mix up the apple pie with chocolate haha. Thanks for the tip on Burgerfuel – will keep it in mind whenever I am in the Newtown or Kings Cross area
