Cupcakes are gaining a serious following in Sydney, with cakeries popping up all over the city – from Cupcakes on Pitt in Chatswood and Parramatta to Babycakes appearing in the inner west. Sad to say, none I’ve tried have lived up to the wonder of those at Magnolia Bakery in Greenwich Village, New York.

Sparkle's dazzling opening entrance
That was until a friend had suggested I stop by Sparkle Cupcakery, a dazzling cupcake boutique smack bang in the heart of Surry Hills. Every bit like the ‘expensive Beverly Hills jewelry store’ she described, Sparkle scored major brownie points with its presentation – wall to floor double doors, gorgeous venetian glass display cabinets (showcasing the all important cakes) and delightful little kartell seats for those dining in.

What a delight to walk into (image courtesy of Sparkle Cupcakery)
Looking past the interiors, I set my eyes on the spread – and what a spread! Flavours to excite anyone with a sweet tooth, there’s plenty to choose from – Oriental Flower (lychee and rose cake), Black Velvet (dark chocolate mud cake), W.Choc & Strawberry (just like it sounds) and Pure Sparkle (vanilla bean).

I settle with Oriental Flower and the cupcake is no disappointment – the flavour is light, well balance and not overly sugary. My only gripe is that the cake is quite dense and not light and fluffy like the ones you’d expect at My Little Cupcake. But it is refreshing to see the interesting twists on traditional flavours, such as vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

While I don’t think Sparkle can compare to Magnolia’s, it’s sweet packaging certainly scores up big with me. It’s definitely a must visit for anyone looking for a sugar hit!

Yummo. That Black velvet one was intense.
I’ve still yet to make it here. It looks gorgeous inside and I do like the names and descriptions of the cakes.
Yes, I’m seeing alot of these places pop up especially in the City near my work!
PRETTYYYYYYY ;D
Really? I found Magnolia in New york to pale beside all the Sydney cupcakes I’ve tried so far!
Sparkle has really picked up it’s game since they opened, it’s great to see. The black velvet is my fave, but oh so rich!
Mr Taste – You sure whoffed down that Black Velvet fast.
Hi Lorraine – Totally agree on the gorgeous names – Pure Sparkle is my favourite!
Hi Howard – It would be a very dangerous combination if I worked closer to these cupcakeries. I’m seeing cupcakes for breakfast, lunch and tea!
Hi Charlie – Yes very yum. I should have brought you one but Mr Taste ate them all.
Hi Reemski – Interesting feedback. What flavours did you try at Magnolias?
Hi again, I had the choc peppermint…

But it was so lacking in flavour! no flavour in the frosting either.. I was soo disappointed!
Wow, and you would think that Choc Peppermint would be delicious! I’ve had the original butter cream and red velvet, both TDF… A friend of mine makes a great choc peppermint, I must put you in touch!
i’ve been past this place a few times but have yet to try them. you certainly right about a cupcake movement happening in Sydney.
Great pics! btw, the one is QVB isn’t a Cupcakes on Pitt
Of course! Thanks for picking it up!
This place is dangerously close to my work… have been avoiding but might check it out. Congrats on a smashing blog.
Thanks Renee! I have actually organised for our office to do a breakfast meeting here. How bad am I!
Wow, I love the look of the interior! Nice photos of the cupcakes too.
The interior is sooo pretty!! I am very intrigued about the Oriental Flower cupcake.. I am so hiking up Foveaux Street to get here!
Lavender-Honey is my fav Sparkle.
Aussies do cupcakes the best, as we strictly use the ‘from scratch’ method.
Agree – nothing special about Magnolia.
FYI – Sydney Sparkles Cupcakery is a virtual copy of the infamous LA Cupcakery SPRINKLES! From the white icing and application…right down to the round coloured dots on the top ;0)

Oh my dear god. They look amazing!!!
[...] is wonderfully made, both soft and airy, without the dryness and density that often brings down other cupcakes. The icing on the cupcakes is even fluffier, plopped on like a cloud of sugary goodness. Chocolate [...]
I tried 3 of those cupcakes and found they were too crumble for my liking ( for cupcake) but the girl staff at the time I went was very very friendly .. till I told friends that how can we get this type of staff if we have our own shop
The best butterfly cakes in the world are sold at a popular cafe in Paddington. You have to be quick..I ring to reserve.
Just to let everyone know, the cupcakes I ordered for a birthday were not the flavours I ordered. Instead of calling me and asking what flavour to substitute as they were out of one flavour, they chose the flavour which I happened to loathe. When calling to let them know about the mistake in the order, the manager, Katherine, was the rudest lady I have every spoken to. She belittled me and told me that they made the order as I requested which they did not and did not even apologise for not calling me to change the flavour. I will never ever return and I warn those who do make an order not to pay till after the purcahse.
I agree with the last reviewer Sparkle Cupcakes were a complete disappointment to me and has to be the WORST HIGH TEA IN SYDNEY. I don’t know if anyone else has been there for high tea but in a word DON’T. It is a complete waste of money the cupcakes were dry and crumbling they all tasted the same, the service was hopeless, the manager extraordinarily rude and the setting cheap and tacky. The photos on the website made it look incredible but it was like real estate photos when you think you are going to see an amazing house and you show up and it is a shoddy second rate flea infested student flat. It was supposed to be a wonderful girly experience but my girlfriends and I left feeling cheated and short changed not to mention hungry. $45 for a high tea that really shouldn’t call itself a high tea. The staff were rude and I agree that the manager really didn’t care. When we told her we were disappointed she basically told us not to come back….wonderful customer service. In this difficult financial market for the manager to be so rude to paying customers it really will surprise me if this crummy establishment survives!!
